control over subsurface scattering properties that are found in many skin, plastic and other materials.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-genesis-blocks-gb-columns gb-block-layout-column\"><div class=\"gb-block-layout-column-inner\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Surface_Color\"><\/span>Surface Color<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This controls the diffuse color of the outer surface of the material. Consider this the overall color of the material. Something to be aware of with this unique material type is that you will not see the translucent effect of the subsurface color if the surface color is completely black.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Subsurface_Color\"><\/span>Subsurface Color<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This setting controls the color that light will take on as it passes through the material. Your own skin is a great example of the subsurface scattering effect. When a bright light shines through the thin parts of an ear or the thin skin between fingers, the light is colored by what lies beneath the surface and comes back more red.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the light is passing through the surface, it is bounced around in many random directions. This creates the soft translucent effect rather than the direct refraction effect of glass and similar materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For plastic materials, you will often set this color to something very similar to the surface color, but perhaps a a bit brighter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-genesis-blocks-gb-column gb-block-layout-column\"><div class=\"gb-block-layout-column-inner\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"378\" height=\"466\" src=\"https:\/\/manual.keyshot.com\/keyshot10\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2020\/12\/translucent_material_panel.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10659\" srcset=\"https:\/\/manual.keyshot.com\/keyshot10\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2020\/12\/translucent_material_panel.png 378w, https:\/\/manual.keyshot.com\/keyshot10\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2020\/12\/translucent_material_panel-243x300.png 243w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 378px) 100vw, 378px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Translucency\"><\/span>Translucency<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This controls how deep light penetrates into and through the surface depending on the units set under&nbsp;<em>Edit &gt; Set Scene Units<\/em>. The higher your translucency value, the more of the subsurface color you will see coming through the surface. Higher translucency values will also create a softer looking material.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Texture\"><\/span>Texture<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This affects the&nbsp;<em>Surface Color&nbsp;<\/em>setting. This color multiplies and blends the surface color. For instance, when the&nbsp;<em>Surface Color&nbsp;<\/em>is yellow and the&nbsp;<em>Texture Color<\/em>&nbsp;is blue, the result will be green. When set to white, it will not affect the surface color.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Specular\"><\/span>Specular<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This controls the intensity of the reflections on the surface.&nbsp;This works together with the&nbsp;<em>Refractive Index<\/em>&nbsp;setting to further increase or decrease the strength of the reflections on the surface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Roughness\"><\/span>Roughness<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Increasing roughness will spread and distribute reflections over the surface and create a more matte surface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"Translucent-Advanced\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Advanced\"><\/span>Advanced<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Refractive_Index\"><\/span>Refractive Index<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This controls how much light will bend or refract as it hits and passes through parts that have this type of material. The default of 1.4 is a good starting point, but you can increase the value to create a more dramatic refraction within the surface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Samples\"><\/span>Samples<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A low samples setting (8 or lower) will tend to make the surface look more noisy, which will give a more imperfect and rough look.
